“I was in a car accident and the other driver didn’t have any car insurance and I don’t have health insurance and can’t afford to see a doctor; what should I do?”
We have patients that this happens to from time to time. One thing you can do is check your car insurance policy and look for “Medical Payments” or “Med Pay”. Usually people are insured for at least $1,000.00 or $2,000. This is insurance on yourself and the occupants of your vehicle. In fact, if you are in another car and there is no insurance, your med pay insurance will follow you. Some states call this Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and their minimum is $10,000 coverage to pay medical bills from your accident.
Once again, this coverage is for medical payments you may incur following a car accident. The cost of this part of the insurance is minimal compared to the liability and collision parts of an auto insurance policy; usually a few dollars to raise the limit is all that’s required. This insurance also covers you if you’re involved in an accident that involves only your vehicle; like if you crash into a tree or run off the road, etc. If you decide not to use the insurance to fix your vehicle, but decide to use the Med Pay insurance, it will have no effect on your insurance premium. In a sense, it’s like using your health care insurance--using it doesn’t cause your premiums to increase. Check with your insurance agent about increasing your Med Pay amount. The more coverage, the less out of pocket expenses you will incur. If taken to the hospital following an accident, it doesn’t take long for a large bill to accumulate.
If you are involved in an accident, at Outer Banks Chiropractic, we will file the Med Pay with your insurance carrier for you. This takes some of the stress of your accident off of you and lets you focus on the most important thing: getting better! Check your auto insurance policy today and make sure you have Med Pay coverage. Those few extra dollars can mean the difference in getting the care you need and minimizing the damaging and lingering effects from the car accident in the future.
If you or anyone you know have been in a car accident, be sure to tell them to see us here at Outer Banks Chiropractic to be evaluated and treated as soon as they are able!

While vacationing in the Outer Banks, I unfortunately threw my lower back out. The staff was kind and compassionate on every visit. A very special thanks to Dr. Hargraves! I was able to enjoy my vacation.
